How to Calculate Your Net Worth (and Why It Matters)
Your net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. It’s one number that shows where you stand with money today.
List what you own and what you owe, and the tracker adds it all up for you. When you save, your numbers stay in your own browser and are never sent to us. You can also print a one-page summary to keep.
Save a total every month or two. The tracker keeps up to 12 saved totals, so you can watch your number grow over time.
Don’t panic if your number is negative. That’s normal when you’re starting out, especially with student loans or a car loan. Which way your number is heading matters more than where it starts.
The Formula
Net worth = what you own − what you owe
Example:
Say you have $8,000 in savings and a car worth $12,000. That means you own $20,000. You owe $15,000 on your car loan and $3,000 on a credit card, so you owe $18,000. Your net worth is $20,000 − $18,000 = $2,000.
What’s my stuff worth? Use what you could sell it for today, not what you paid. A car loses value every year, so look up its current value. You can skip everyday things like clothes and furniture, since they don’t sell for much.
